Wind Turbine & Wind Farm Inspections

Drone Applications

How can drones support wind turbine and wind farm inspections?

From detailed blade surveys to wider wind farm mapping,
drone technology supports inspection, condition monitoring
and maintenance planning across wind energy assets.

01 / BLADE CONDITION

Wind Turbine Blade Inspections

Capture detailed visual records of accessible blade surfaces,
including leading edges, trailing edges, tips and root areas.
High-resolution imagery can reveal visible erosion,
cracking, coating damage and other surface concerns.

02 / DAMAGE ASSESSMENT

Lightning & Impact Damage Surveys

Document visible evidence of lightning strikes,
bird impacts and other external damage.
Recorded observations can help engineers identify
areas requiring specialist examination or repair.

03 / EXTERNAL STRUCTURES

Tower, Nacelle & Hub Inspections

Survey accessible tower surfaces, nacelle housings,
hub exteriors, coatings and external components
for corrosion, damage, deterioration
and other visible abnormalities.

04 / WIND FARM MAPPING

Site Mapping & Infrastructure Surveys

Map access tracks, turbine locations, drainage features,
substations and surrounding infrastructure.
Aerial records can support site planning,
maintenance access and asset documentation.

05 / CONSTRUCTION

Development & Installation Monitoring

Capture construction progress, turbine assembly activity
from permitted viewpoints, access infrastructure
and site conditions during wind farm development.
Imagery provides useful project records.

06 / ASSET MANAGEMENT

Repeat Inspections & Condition Records

Use consistent inspection methods to document
visible changes over time, review known defects
and support decisions about maintenance,
specialist testing and future inspections.

From Flight to Maintenance Decision

Plan the inspection. Capture the detail. Inform the next step.

A structured inspection process helps ensure imagery is
relevant to the asset, captured safely and presented
in a form that engineers and maintenance teams can use.

01. Plan & Coordinate

Agree inspection priorities, turbine availability,
rotor and blade positioning, site permissions,
weather limits and safe operating procedures.

02. Capture & Document

Collect suitable high-resolution imagery and
other relevant survey information from controlled
viewpoints, with sufficient detail for review.

03. Review & Report

Organise observations by turbine and component,
allowing asset specialists to assess findings
and plan further investigations or repairs.

Understanding Wind Turbine Drone Inspections

Can a drone identify every type of blade damage?

Drone inspections provide valuable external condition records,
but different defects require different detection methods.
A detailed photograph is not the same as a complete
structural assessment.

Operational consideration:
Detailed blade surveys are normally planned in coordination
with the turbine operator, with an appropriately controlled
turbine state and blade positioning. Wind conditions,
turbulence, turbine geometry and moving rotor hazards
must be addressed in the operational risk assessment.
Drone obstacle avoidance must not be relied upon
as the primary protection against turbine collision.

Why It Matters

Better visibility of asset condition.
More targeted maintenance.
Stronger inspection records.

Drone surveys can help wind farm operators
gather useful visual information before
committing specialist access and
maintenance resources.

Reduce Difficult-Access Inspections

Aerial imagery can help assess suitable external
areas before deciding whether technicians,
rope access or specialist equipment
are required for closer investigation.

Prioritise Maintenance

Detailed visual records can identify areas
of concern and help engineers plan
repairs, specialist testing and
future inspection activity.

Improve Asset Documentation

Consistent imagery, defect references and
mapping information support condition
records and comparisons
across inspection cycles.
