Electrical Substations & Energy Infrastructure Inspections

Drone Applications

Where can drones support substation and energy asset inspections?

From external equipment condition surveys to site mapping,
drone technology can provide valuable information
to support electrical engineering teams
and asset maintenance programmes.

01 / THERMAL ASSESSMENT

Thermal Imaging of Electrical Equipment

Radiometric thermal cameras can document apparent
temperature anomalies around accessible electrical
components under suitable operating and viewing
conditions. Findings require competent interpretation
and, where appropriate, further electrical testing.

02 / TRANSFORMER CONDITION

Transformer & Cooling Equipment Inspections

Capture external imagery of transformer housings,
radiators, cooling assemblies, bushings and
associated visible equipment to document
contamination, deterioration or
suspected thermal abnormalities.

03 / COMPONENT CONDITION

Insulators, Busbars & Switchgear

High-resolution photography and suitable optical
zoom can record accessible external conditions
of insulators, busbar arrangements, connections
and outdoor switchgear from approved positions.

04 / SITE SURVEYING

Substation Mapping & Digital Records

Photogrammetry and suitable LiDAR workflows
can support mapping of site structures,
buildings, access areas and external
infrastructure for planning, documentation
and engineering review.

05 / INFRASTRUCTURE CONDITION

Structures, Buildings & Site Assets

Document external buildings, roofs, supports,
perimeter features, access routes and visible
civil infrastructure to help identify
deterioration and maintenance requirements.

06 / ASSET MANAGEMENT

Repeat Inspections & Condition Monitoring

Consistent aerial records can support periodic
condition reviews, comparison of previous
observations and planning of specialist
inspections or corrective maintenance.

From Inspection to Asset Management

Plan safely. Capture useful evidence. Inform maintenance.

Substation drone operations require close coordination
with the site operator and an inspection method
appropriate to the electrical environment.

01. Assess & Coordinate

Establish inspection priorities, site permissions,
electrical hazards, safe flight boundaries
and operating restrictions with the asset owner.

02. Capture & Document

Use suitable visual, thermal or mapping sensors
from approved positions to collect
consistent inspection information.

03. Review & Report

Deliver clearly organised observations
and supporting imagery for evaluation
by competent electrical specialists
and maintenance personnel.

Understanding Substation Drone Inspections

Can thermal imaging identify an electrical fault?

Thermal imaging can highlight unusual surface
temperature patterns, but an apparent hotspot
is not automatically confirmation of an
electrical defect or its cause.

Operational safety:
Electrical substations are controlled, potentially
hazardous environments. Flights require permission
from the responsible operator and a site-specific
assessment of electrical clearances, conductor hazards,
electromagnetic interference, positioning reliability
and emergency procedures. Drone obstacle avoidance
does not replace these controls.

Why It Matters

Better inspection evidence. More informed maintenance. Stronger asset records.

Drones can support established inspection
programmes by providing additional
visual and thermal information
for asset owners and engineers.

Improve Visibility of External Conditions

Detailed imagery can support assessments
of accessible components and help identify
visible deterioration before specialist
work is planned.

Support Targeted Maintenance

Organised observations may help
maintenance teams prioritise
components for additional testing,
repair or replacement.

Develop Consistent Digital Records

Periodic imagery and suitable
mapping outputs provide
information for future
condition reviews and
infrastructure planning.
