GVC and A2 CofC Renewal

As we approach 1st January 2025, many remote pilots (RP) will be hitting the 5-year anniversary and their General Visual Line of Sight Certificate (GVC) and A2 Certificate of Competency (A2 CofC) will require renewal.

With the impending expirations the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has recently updated its guidance for the renewal of both the General Visual Line of Sight Certificate (GVC) and the A2 Certificate of Competency (A2 CofC) for drone operators. The regulations emphasise the importance of ensuring that remote pilots (RP) maintain up-to-date practical skills and theoretical knowledge to operate unmanned aerial systems (UAS) safely.

Whether you’re renewing your GVC or A2 CofC, the process has been clarified, and Iprosurv is here to help you stay compliant and certified with ease.

What You Need to Know About Your CAA GVC and A2 CofC Renewal:
GVC Renewal Requirements:

The CAA requires all remote pilots renewing their GVC to retake the practical flight assessment unless the following exemption criteria are met:

  • Flight Time Currency: A minimum of 2 hours of flying within the last three months, verifiable through flight logs.
  • Class-Specific Logs: If your GVC includes both fixed-wing and multirotor drones, currency for both must be demonstrated.
  • Required Documentation: You must submit proof of identity, your current GVC certificate, valid flyer ID, and flight logs.

If competency cannot be adequately demonstrated via flight logs, an RAE such as Iprosurv may require a skills demonstration or recommend additional training.

A2 CofC Renewal Requirements:

For A2 CofC renewals, pilots must:

  • Provide a declaration of competence along with identity verification, current A2 CofC certificate, valid flyer ID, and flight logs that show you’ve completed the necessary self-learning building blocks within the last three months.
  • If competency is not proven, a full theoretical course and assessment will be required.
Theoretical Knowledge Reassessments for GVC and A2 CofC

For both GVC and A2 CofC renewals, theoretical knowledge reassessments are also mandatory unless the following conditions are met:

  1. You pass the latest theoretical knowledge test with a score of at least 75%.
  2. You have only one attempt at the assessment. Failing will require you to retake the full theoretical course and exam.
  3. Assessments can be taken either remotely or in person, depending on the RAE’s approved methods.
Renewal and Expiry Information:
  1. Renewals can be completed with any Recognised Assessment Entity (RAE), not necessarily the one that issued your original certificate.
  2. Renewed certificates will be valid for five years from the current expiry date.
  3. If your GVC or A2 CofC has already expired, a full course must be completed unless you booked your renewal prior to the expiry date.
