The challenge
A seed drill malfunction left parts of a large wheat field under-seeded. The uneven distribution risked lower yields, but walking the field and checking seed placement by hand would be slow and would only sample parts of the area.
The farmer wanted to re-drill while the summer growing conditions still allowed it. Before work could begin, the insurer needed clear information about the malfunction’s impact. The immediate question was practical: where had seeding been affected, and how much of the field needed attention?
Case at a glance
Sector: Agriculture
Issue: Seed drill malfunction and under-seeding
Platform: DJI Mavic 3M Multispectral
Output: Mapped extent of the affected area
Users: Farmer and insurer
The approach
Iprosurv used a DJI Mavic 3M Multispectral to capture field data. The imagery was processed to identify and measure areas where crop establishment differed, giving the farmer and insurer a clearer view of the issue than isolated ground checks could provide.
Capture consistent aerial data across the affected field.
Map the areas where crop establishment differed and measure their extent.
Provide mapped information for the farmer and insurer to review when considering next steps.
The result
The survey identified an under-seeded area of 2.14 acres (approximately 8,661.8 m²). That gave the farmer and insurer a shared, mapped record of the issue to support assessment and inform decisions about remedial seeding.
For the farmer, the map helped focus attention on the affected ground. For the insurer, it provided documented evidence to review as part of the claim. The case shows how aerial mapping can help turn a field-wide concern into a defined area for investigation.
What the data supported
Why it matters
A mapped aerial survey gives stakeholders a consistent overview of a field-wide issue, helps direct follow-up checks and provides a record they can review together.
For crop management and agricultural claims, it can help answer a more useful question than “is there a problem?”: where is it, how extensive is it, and what should happen next?
